KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Dipec 1 were denied a historic third consecutive title after going down 13-8 to Thailand’s Sai Buri Team 2 in the final of the 3rd Malaysia International Petanque Doubles 2026 at Arena Petanque Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

Mohd Nuzul Azwan and Mohd Shah Ismail had entered the tournament chasing a remarkable three-peat after emerging champions in both the 2024 and 2025 editions, but were ultimately stopped by Thailand national players Thanawan Toosewha and Phongsakron Ainpu.

Thanawan and Phongsakron, who were part of Thailand’s SEA Games squad that emerged overall champions in petanque last year, walked away with the RM20,000 top prize following an impressive campaign throughout the three-day tournament.

           Dipec 1 settled for RM10,000 as runners-up.

Another Thai pair, Piyabut Chamchoi-Wanchana Phueakaiam of Sai Buri Team 1, secured third place and RM5,000. Piyabut was also part of Thailand’s SEA Games contingent last year.

Malaysia’s MIG 1 represented by Muhammad Aliff Syazwan and Muhammad Izral Ramlan finished fourth to earn RM3,000.

Held from May 8-10, the prestigious tournament attracted a massive field of 192 teams from 10 countries — Brunei, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, France, Singapore, Thailand and hosts Malaysia — with competitors battling through a gruelling competition format comprising Swiss qualifying rounds followed by knockout stages.

Sai Buri Team 2 displayed remarkable consistency throughout the tournament, successfully navigating four rounds of Swiss-system qualifying before embarking on a dominant knockout run.

Their title-winning campaign included victories over INDIA-3 (13-2) in the Best 64, DRAGON 2 (13-7) in the Best 32, SENTUL 1 (13-7) in the Best 16, and DW 2 (13-4) in the quarter-finals.

The eventual champions then overcame Sai Buri Team 1 13-6 in an all-Thai semi-final before sealing the title against Dipec 1 in the championship decider.

Dipec 1 had earlier edged compatriots Dipec 2 9-3 in the quarter-finals before defeating MIG 1 13-10 in the semi-finals to secure their place in the final.

The tournament began with four rounds of Swiss-system qualifying matches, where teams were ranked based on wins and tie-break criteria before the top 128 teams progressed into the single-elimination knockout stage.

A total of 512 matches were successfully conducted over the three-day tournament, highlighting both the scale and intensity of this year’s edition as well as the tremendous effort put in by the Malaysian Boules Sports Federation (MBSF) organising committee and technical officials.

From there, teams had to survive seven consecutive knockout matches — from the Best 128 through to the final — in order to lift the championship trophy, making endurance, consistency and mental strength equally crucial throughout the competition.

Prize money was awarded up to the top 32 finishers, further raising the level of competitiveness across the event.

Additional special category honours were also awarded during the tournament, with Malaysia Junior 4 emerging as champions in the Best Women Team category ahead of Malaysia 1 and Malaysia 4.

Meanwhile, Sarawak 2026_2 captured the Best Youth Under-20 Team title, followed by Sarawak 2026_6 as first runners-up and Malaysia Junior 1 in third place.

The special category results further reflected the encouraging growth of women’s and youth participation in the sport, underlining MBSF’s continued efforts in developing the next generation of petanque talent in Malaysia.

MBSF president Cheah Ban Cheng expressed satisfaction with the overall success of the championships and praised the commitment shown by the organising committee, technical officials and volunteers throughout the tournament.

“We are very pleased with the overall standard of competition and the strong participation this year. The tournament continues to grow positively and this reflects the increasing interest and development of petanque both in Malaysia and within the region,” said Cheah.

“The format this year also ensured players were given more competitive matches and valuable exposure before entering the knockout rounds, which ultimately raised the overall quality and intensity of the competition.”

Cheah also commended the efforts of everyone involved in ensuring the smooth running of the tournament despite the demanding schedule involving hundreds of matches across the three days.

“This tournament is not only about winning and losing, but also about strengthening friendships, sportsmanship and unity within the international petanque community. We hope to continue building this tournament into one of the region’s premier petanque events in the years ahead,” he added.

The successful staging of the tournament once again showcased the growing popularity of petanque while providing Malaysian players valuable exposure against strong international opposition.

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 December: The Malaysian Boules Sport Federation (MBSF) has begun laying the groundwork towards the 34th SEA Games in 2027 and the 51st Men's Triplettes World Championships & the 17th Precision Shooting World Championship next year after concluding a comprehensive post-Games review of the national team’s performance at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand.

Acting President Cheah Ban Cheng said the assessment was carried out following a detailed report submitted by team manager Mariah Abdullah, who also serves as MBSF executive secretary, with the objective of strengthening Malaysia’s preparations for the upcoming major international assignments — both of which will be hosted on home soil.

“At the Thailand SEA Games, our pétanque team successfully achieved the four-medal target that was set prior to the competition. This reflects the commitment, discipline and fighting spirit shown by the players throughout the past week,” said Cheah.

Malaysia concluded their campaign with four bronze medals, delivered through men’s shooting, mixed doubles, and both the men’s and women’s triples events.

The medals were won by Nuzul Azwan Ahmad Temizi in the men’s shooting, the mixed doubles pairing of Ayzek Hakimi Safingan–Sharifah Afiqah Farzana Syed Ali, the men’s triples combination of Khairul Amirul Zamrulhisham, Mohamad Muqri Arif Mohamad Sapiny and Syed Afiq Fakhri Syed Ali, and the women’s triples team of Jasnina Jasmine Johan, Nur Durratul Sahira Yazit and Thadis Henhera Vennice.

Cheah noted that while the medal target was met, the post-Games review also identified clear areas for improvement as Malaysia aim to progress beyond podium finishes and challenge for higher medal colours in future editions.

“The overall assessment shows that our players possess solid technical skills and strong individual ability. They were competitive against top regional opponents and displayed good teamwork and resilience throughout the Games,” he said.

“However, the review also highlighted a gap at the higher competitive level, particularly in tactical execution and in-game decision-making during critical moments.”

According to the assessment, added Cheah, tactical elements such as reading opponents, controlling tempo, shot selection and adapting to changing match situations play a decisive role at SEA Games level, and will be a key focus area moving forward.

Cheah also stressed that strengthening the team’s tactical framework — both in preparation and during competition — will be essential as Malaysia prepares for a new cycle.

“We recognise the importance of strong tactical leadership and clear in-game guidance. Enhancing this aspect will help our players manage pressure better and convert close matches into higher-value medals,” he said.

Looking ahead, Cheah stressed that the upcoming period presents a significant opportunity for Malaysian pétanque, with Malaysia set to host the 52nd World Pétanque Championships next year, followed by the 34th SEA Games in 2027.

“These two major events, especially the SEA Games on home ground, provide us with a clear timeline and motivation to raise our performance standards. The focus now is on refining our tactical approach, strengthening mental resilience, and ensuring our players receive the best possible support to compete at the highest level,” he said.

“With focused improvements, greater exposure to high-level international competition, and a strengthened coaching structure, we believe the Malaysian pétanque team has the potential to challenge more strongly for silver and gold medals in future major championships.”

Cheah reiterated that MBSF remains fully committed to long-term athlete development and building a team capable of delivering strong results when Malaysia takes centre stage as host nation in the years ahead.

The men’s triples line-up features Khairul Amirul Zamrulhisham, Mohamad Muqri Arif Mohamad Sapiny and Syed Afiq Fakhri Syed Ali while the women’s triples squad comprises Jasmina Jasmine Johan, Nur Durratul Sahira Yazit and Thadis Henhera Vennice.

Both events will begin with their preliminary rounds on Sunday, with teams once again required to finish inside the top four to advance to the medal playoffs, which resume on Monday.

Malaysia head into the remaining events encouraged by the two bronze medals already secured — through Nuzul Azwan Ahmad Temizi in the men’s shooting event and the mixed doubles pairing of Ayzek Hakimi Safingan–Sharifah Afiqah Farzana Syed Ali — keeping the four-medal target set by the Malaysian Boules Sport Federation (MBSF) firmly within reach.

With belief still high and opportunities still on the table, the national squad will be looking to finish strongly as the SEA Games petanque competition enters its final phase in Pathum Thani.

Mixed doubles deliver second SEA Games bronze as Malaysia press on in mixed triples events

“I feel that I was unable to show my true performance in today’s semi-final, but this experience will serve as an important lesson moving forward.” The latest podium finish further enhances Sharifah’s growing SEA Games resume, with the national player now owning three medals to date.

In addition to her two bronze medals in mixed doubles, she was also a silver medallist in the mixed triples (two women, one man) event at the Cambodia SEA Games, underlining her consistency and versatility across multiple disciplines.

With the mixed doubles event concluded, focus has shifted to the mixed triples, where Malaysia are competing in two categories — the two men, one woman (2M1W) event and the one man, two women (1M2W) event — with the qualifying rounds contested under the Swiss System format.

In the 2M1W category, the experienced trio of Syed Akmal Fikri Syed Ali, Saiful Bahri Musmin and Sharifah Aqilah Farhana Syed Ali made a solid start by edging Laos 10–9 in the opening round before going down 13–7 to Indonesia in the second round.

The trio will face Vietnam in their final qualifying match.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s 1M2W combination of Nur Thahira Tasnim Abdul Aziz, Siti Asiah Zaini and Mohamad Shah Ismail showed resilience after opening with a 9–4 loss to Vietnam, bouncing back with a hard-fought 9–7 victory over Myanmar in the second round.

They will meet Thailand in their final qualifying encounter.

Both mixed triples teams head into their final matches knowing a win would place them in the top four and secure a place in the medal playoffs. With momentum building and several medal opportunities still in play, Malaysia’s petanque squad remain firmly focused on strengthening their overall SEA Games medal haul in the days ahead.

Malaysia secure mixed doubles semi-final berth as team reaches halfway mark of SEA Games medal target

Ayzek expressed gratitude and belief ahead of the semi-finals.

“First of all, I’m very grateful to have made it to the semi-finals tomorrow. I want to thank everyone who has been praying for us, especially my parents and all Malaysians.

“For tomorrow’s match, I will give everything I have to try and win Malaysia’s first petanque gold at the SEA Games in Thailand.

“I previously won a bronze medal in the triples event at the Vietnam SEA Games, but this partnership with Afikah is actually very new. With such a short time together, it was not easy to build chemistry, but we’ve worked hard throughout training to develop that understanding as quickly as possible.”

Regardless of the outcome, their achievement already surpasses Malaysia’s showing in the previous edition, where the mixed doubles event ended without a medal.

The men’s doubles team of Helmi Mat Daud–Ahmad Safuan Ibrahim and the women’s pairing of Nur Alya Farzana Rushazlir Effendy–Siti Noor Ellyshatul Balqish Suhaimi bowed out after the preliminary phase, but the squad remains well positioned overall with multiple medal opportunities still ahead.

National coach Wahadhir Hamdan expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress and noted the contrasting fortunes across the doubles categories.

“Our men’s and women’s doubles were unfortunate today. Their level of play wasn’t the same as in the opening match — they gave very good resistance early on, but in the following games we struggled to find our rhythm,” he said.

“For the mixed doubles, we will meet the Philippines in the semi-finals tomorrow. The bronze is already secured, now it’s just a matter of trying to change it to brighter colour.”

Malaysia will also open their challenge in two mixed triples events tomorrow morning (12 December), adding further medal avenues for the squad.

All eyes will be on the experienced trio of Syed Akmal Fikri Syed Ali, Saiful Bahri Musmin and Sharifah Aqilah Farhana Syed Ali, whose blend of experience, tactical maturity and competitive temperament makes them one of Malaysia’s strongest prospects in the discipline.

The second mixed triples team — Nur Thahira Tasnim Abdul Aziz, Siti Asiah Zaini and Mohamad Shah Ismail — will also begin their preliminary rounds at the same 9.30am session, looking to make a strong impression.

As Malaysia look to continue building momentum in Pathum Thani, the squad remains firmly on track in pursuit of the four-medal mission, with two medals secured and several events still to unfold.

National pétanque stalwart Nuzul Azwan Ahmad Temizi delivered Malaysia’s first medal of the Thailand SEA Games, securing a well-earned bronze in the men’s shooting event today at Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University.

The experienced 37-year-old, more fondly known as Wan, continued his consistent track record on the regional stage after edging his way into the semi-finals.

Azwan advanced to the semi-finals and settled for joint-third after a narrow 38–37 battle against Indonesia’s Satria Topan. The podium finish marks Nuzul’s third SEA Games medal in the shooting discipline following his silver in Laos 2009 and bronze in Singapore 2015, and his sixth overall SEA Games medal – reinforcing his status as one of Malaysia’s most reliable and decorated pétanque athletes.

Azwan shared that the performance gives him valuable takeaways heading into the remaining events.

“I was leading earlier but couldn’t take advantage of the final discipline,” he said.

“Still, this gives me important lessons to stay mentally strong in crucial situations. I hope this medal gives a boost to my teammates as we look forward to the coming events.”

Malaysia turned in a spirited effort across the four individual categories, with valuable exposure gained by Hafizuddin Mat Daud in men's singles, Nur Durratul Iffah Yazit in women's singles, and Nur Iman Aina Ahmad Sabti in women's shooting Malaysia remain well positioned in the overall medal hunt, with several strong medal opportunities still ahead in the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles, scheduled to begin with preliminary rounds tomorrow.

Malaysia are set to field three pairings across the doubles discipline tomorrow, with Muhammad Helmi Mat Daud–Ahmad Safuan Ibrahim lining up in the men’s doubles, Ayzek Hakimi Safingan–Sharifah Afiqah Farzana Syed Ali combining in the mixed doubles, and the women’s charge led by Nur Alya Farzana Rushazlir Effendy–Siti Noor Ellyshatul Balqish Suhaimi.

Malaysia’s national petanque squad are in buoyant mood and determined to make a fast start when the 33rd Thailand SEA Games begin at Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University in Pathum Thani on Wednesday.

The first day will see four gold medals contested — men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s shooting and women’s shooting — with Malaysia expected to be in the medal picture across all four events.

Seasoned campaigners Hafizuddin Mat Daud and Nuzul Azwan Ahmad Temizi will spearhead the challenge in the men’s singles and men’s shooting respectively.

Hafizuddin, a two-time SEA Games men's singles champion, will attempt to extend Malaysia’s remarkable winning streak in the event — a title the country has not surrendered since he first claimed it in Singapore 2015.

The Malaysian Boules Sport Federation (MBSF) today launched its official website, marking a major step towards modernising the governance, visibility and development of Boules sports in the country.

The platform serves as a centralised hub for national team information, athlete profiles, events and results, umpire certification pathways, affiliate listings and community updates — strengthening MBSF’s role as the national governing body for all Boules disciplines in Malaysia, including Bocce, Lyonnaise and Pétanque.

Acting President Cheah Ban Cheng said the launch reflects the federation’s commitment to transparency, strengthened communication and long-term development.

“Boules has grown steadily in Malaysia, and this platform allows us to better showcase our athletes, share verified information, and support the next generation of players and officials,” he said.

“It represents our commitment to professionalism, accessibility and raising the overall standard of the sport.”

The event was officiated by Guest of Honour, Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali, Secretary General of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), together with Tan Sri Mohamad Noor Abdul Rahim, Chairman of MBSF and President of the Asian Boules Sport Confederation.

Malaysia will be represented by a 24-strong contingent — 12 men and 12 women — making it one of the largest squads the federation has assembled for the Games. It is a seasoned lineup, with 13 athletes having already won at least one medal at the Games. The men’s team includes three of Malaysia’s most decorated petanque players — Saiful Bahri Musmin, Muhamad Hafizuddin Mat Daud and Syed Akmal Fikri Syed Ali — the trio responsible for all five of Malaysia’s SEA Games gold medals to date. Cheah said the squad carries strong momentum into Thailand.

“This is a proven and balanced team with a solid mix of experience and emerging talent. We are confident they will rise to the occasion,” he said.

Malaysia will aim to extend its gold-medal streak, having secured at least one gold in four of the last five SEA Games editions. Beyond competition, Cheah emphasised that the website also supports MBSF’s long-term agenda — including athlete development pathways, umpire education, affiliate support and increased community participation. “Accessibility to information is crucial for the sport to grow. This website is part of our long-term strategy to build a stronger Boules ecosystem nationwide,” he said.

The new MBSF website will serve as the federation’s main digital platform for updates, announcements, results, education resources and grassroots engagement.

Malaysia's Petanque Squad Builds Momentum for SEA Games with Strong Asian Championship Haul

The national petanque team delivered a promising performance at the Asian Petanque Championships, concluding last Sunday with a haul of three silver and three bronze medals, solidifying their prospects for the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand.

This successful campaign on home turf at Arena Petanque Kuala Lumpur underscores the team's consistent form. It continues a proud national tradition; since petanque's introduction at the 2003 Hanoi Games, Malaysia has never failed to medal, securing gold in four of the past five editions.

While a gold medal was elusive this time, the results affirm the team's competitive readiness.

This builds on a strong run of international form, including a men's singles bronze at the World Championships in Rome and the Nation Cup title at the Women's World Championships in France. The momentum extends to the youth level, with a mixed doubles bronze won at last month's World Junior Championships in Spain.

Head coach Nasir Noor praised the squad's remarkable commitment, as most players juggle full-time careers with elite training. "Many of our players hold regular jobs, so finding time to train isn't easy," Nasir said. "But they've shown tremendous discipline and professionalism to keep our SEA Games preparations on track."

He highlighted Nur Iman Aina Ahmad Sabti's unexpected silver in precision shooting as a testament to the team's depth. "We were considered underdogs in that event," he admitted. "Results like Aina's show the determination within this team. We'll keep improving to close the gap on Thailand and Vietnam."

The championship also revealed exciting new talent. Emerging players like Muqri Arif Sapiny, Idham Shahrulzahari, and Khairul Amirul Zamrul Hisyam, who took bronze in the men's triples, proved they can deliver under pressure. A junior team also secured silver in the mixed triples, highlighting a robust pipeline beyond established stars.

Veteran player-coach Nuzul Azwan, who won a precision-shooting bronze and is set for his eighth SEA Games, echoed the sentiment of a narrowing gap with regional powerhouses. "The gap isn't huge," Azwan stated. "We just need more exposure and belief."

Malaysia's junior mixed triples team fell just short of gold at the 6th Asian Petanque Championships today.

The home side lost 13-2 to Thailand A in the final at Arena Petanque Kuala Lumpur. Thailand, led by world junior mixed-precision-shooting champions Suekham Pannada and Aramrod Saharat, proved simply too strong.

Malaysia — featuring Muhammad Aidil Zakri Junaidi, Muhammad Arsyad Muhammad Tajuddin, Siti Noor Ellyshatul Balqish Suhaimi and Nur Erissya Najwa Helmey — made a bright start. They held Thailand 1-1 after two ends before the visitors surged 6-1 ahead and never looked back.

Our pointing still needs improvement — the control, the spin, the lift — but overall we're happy to have made it this far. It's our first Asian Championships together, and reaching the final is already a big achievement. Of course, there's some disappointment because we were one step away from gold. But this experience has motivated us to keep improving and come back stronger

This junior team was only formed in July, and we had about several months to prepare — most of it through online training," said Nuzul. The players have solid foundations through the SUKMA programme with their respective states, but they lack international exposure compared to Thailand, who came with two world junior champions. Considering the circumstances, our players did exceptionally well. This silver shows Malaysia's junior programme is on the right track.

Malaysia is poised to make history with a potential debut as host of the 2026 Petanque World Championships, a move that could elevate the nation’s profile in the global boules arena.

Malaysian Boules Sports Federation (MBSF) acting president Cheah Ban Cheng said the World Petanque and Bowls Federation (WPBF) has offered Malaysia the hosting rights, tentatively set for late September next year. “It’s an incredible honour as Malaysia has never hosted a World Championship before,” Cheah said in a statement today.

“The World Championships bring together the best teams from five continents, based on world rankings from the previous edition. For Asia, only six countries qualify, so it’s truly the sport’s elite level.”

Cheah said discussions with the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) are underway to finalise the decision, noting that Malaysia’s existing facilities — particularly the Arena Petanque Kuala Lumpur — place the country in a strong position to host.

“We already have the infrastructure and are ready anytime. Having such a facility right in the heart of the capital city is something few countries can boast,” he said, crediting Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for its support in developing the arena.

He added that hosting the championship would coincide neatly with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, providing an opportunity to showcase the nation’s sporting and tourism strengths.

The estimated hosting cost is around RM1.3 million, covering accommodation and meals for all participating teams.

Meanwhile, WPBF president Claude Azema voiced full confidence in Malaysia’s capability to deliver a world-class event.

“I came here to see whether Malaysia is capable of hosting a World Championship, and I’m confident it is,” he said.
