Malaysia respond under pressure as men’s and women’s triples advance to SEA Games semi-finals

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 December: Malaysia’s petanque squad produced a rousing response at the 33rd Thailand SEA Games today after both the men’s and women’s triples teams booked their places in the semi-finals, assuring at least two more bronze medals and officially hitting the four-medal target set by the Malaysian Boules Sport Federation (MBSF).

The double qualification marks a major boost for the national team and underlines their resilience and unity as the competition enters its decisive phase at Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University.

The men’s triples team of Khairul Amirul Zamrulhisham, Mohamad Muqri Arif Mohamad Sapiny and Syed Afiq Fakhri Syed Ali showed tremendous character in the Swiss System qualifiers to finish fourth in the six-team standings.

After opening their campaign with a narrow 8-10 defeat, the Malaysians responded emphatically with commanding wins over Indonesia (13–1) and the Philippines (13–3) to secure their place in the semi-finals.

Syed Afiq said the team’s revival was driven by collective belief and support within the Malaysian camp.

“I truly believe that what lifted our spirits and pushed us to fight today and qualify for the semi-finals was the motivation we drew from our teammates,” he said.

“We carried the fighting spirit of the rest of the squad onto the court, knowing that we were playing not just for ourselves, but to add more shine to Malaysian petanque.

“Of course there was pressure — it would be a lie to say there wasn’t — but Alhamdulillah, the three of us were able to handle it thanks to the strong moral support from our teammates. For me, this medal is not just for the three of us, but for the entire team.”

They will face Thailand in the semi-finals as Malaysia look to improve on the guaranteed bronze.

Competing in a round-robin format, Malaysia’s women’s triples team of Jasmina Jasmine Johan, Nur Durratul Sahira Yazit and Thadis Henhera Vennice finished fourth overall, doing just enough to secure a top-four spot and advance to the medal playoffs.

Malaysia recorded a crucial 13–0 victory over the Philippines, a result that ultimately proved decisive in determining qualification.

They later went down fighting against Vietnam (6–9) and Laos (6–13), before concluding the group stage with a 2–13 loss to Thailand.

Despite registering just one win, the emphatic triumph over the Philippines ensured Malaysia progressed to the semi-finals, where they will once again face top-ranked Thailand.

With both triples teams advancing, Malaysia have now secured at least four medals at the Thailand SEA Games — adding to the earlier bronze medals won by Nuzul Azwan Ahmad Temizi in the men’s shooting event and the mixed doubles pairing of Ayzek Hakimi Safingan–Sharifah Afiqah Farzana Syed Ali.

As the semi-finals await, Malaysia’s petanque squad remain focused and united, determined to continue building on this momentum and fight for a brighter medal colour as their SEA Games campaign reaches its climax.

Malaysia’s national petanque squad are in buoyant mood and determined to make a fast start when the 33rd Thailand SEA Games begin at Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University in Pathum Thani on Wednesday. The first day will see four gold medals contested — men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s shooting and women’s shooting — with Malaysia expected to be in the medal picture across all four events. Seasoned campaigners Hafizuddin Mat Daud and Nuzul Azwan Ahmad Temizi will spearhead the challenge in the men’s singles and men’s shooting respectively. Hafizuddin, a two-time SEA Games men's singles champion, will attempt to extend Malaysia’s remarkable winning streak in the event — a title the country has not surrendered since he first claimed it in Singapore 2015.
